The design of the shopping centre in the new town of Milton Keynes was informed, in part, as a reaction against the concrete megastructures at the heart of earlier new towns such as Cumbernauld in Scotland. It was envisioned as a covered high street, the centre’s two airy glass arcades suggesting a closer affliation to nineteenth-century arcades than the American malls of the 1950s onwards.
